Diver Has Close Encounter With Feeding Humpback Whale
A diver had a close encounter with a humpback whale when one feeding on a giant herring bait ball almost crashed into her. Dianshan Ee was diving off the Northern coast of Norway in the fjords looking for Orca and humpbacks while aboard the M/S Malmo, a winter whale watching expedition boat. After spotting some herring bait balls – a known food source of the two whale species – the group got into the water to watch on from a safe distance near the surface as the whales swam deep beneath feeding. But video recorded by Dianshan shows how suddenly the view became shrouded in a hazy mass of herring darting towards the camera. As the huge shoal of fish obscures the view of the whales, they suddenly part – revealing a humpback chasing them. Rising out of the water, the whale breaches slightly before gliding past a few feet away from Dianshan, almost knocking into her.
