Stationed far from home and struggling financially before her baby arrived, a U.S. Army nursing specialist who thought she had no “village” was stunned when coworkers bought every item on her baby registry. Cynthia Amarales, 27, is based in Honolulu, Hawaii, having moved to the island because of her husband Luis' military commitments. Since September 2024, Cynthia has worked on a military hospital’s labor and delivery ward as a baby catcher, and since Day 1, she has been made to feel welcome by the doctors and users around her. But being away from home has also been tough, Cynthia admitted, as she and Luis are far away from their family, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, who would have provided support for Cynthia's pregnancy. Combined with this separation, Luis also left the military during Cynthia’s pregnancy, meaning money was tight for the couple on just Cynthia's paycheck, and the pair were also moving house ahead of their new arrival. But on the evening of July 10, Cynthia received a message from her sergeant first class, asking her to come to work the next morning because their commander wanted to speak to her. Cynthia, who has a good relationship with her leadership, didn't think much of the request, but on the morning of the surprise, Luis then insisted that Cynthia dress up for the occasion, which made her think she might, in fact, be getting an award. Having made it to the military treatment facility where she works, Cynthia then went to find her sergeant, while Luis headed off with her colleagues into a nearby room. Then, when Cynthia entered the room with her colleagues, she received a beautiful surprise, looking across the room and seeing the group had purchased every item she needed on her baby registry. The 27-year-old wiped away tears of happiness and turned to walk out of the room to compose herself.
